Summer has finally arrived! We’re here to help you save energy during the upcoming warm months, when one of your priorities is keeping your indoor climate cool and comfortable. Some of the tips below can be used on a daily basis to cut down on your energy bills; others are simple and fairly inexpensive actions you can take to save a little more this season.
Use Your Windows: Cool Air In, Hot Air Out!
Pennsylvania summer nights tend to be not so brutal as high noon. When the outdoor temperature is a bit more bearable, turn off your cooling system and open your windows while sleeping. In the morning, shut the windows and blinds to keep that cool air. You may also consider installing window coverings and various treatments to prevent excess heat from coming through your windows.
Efficient Use of Your Thermostat
Set your thermostat as high as you can (while still remaining relatively comfortable) in the summer. The smaller the difference between outdoor and indoor temperatures, the lower your cooling bill.
Keep your house warmer than usual when you are away, and lower the thermostat to 78°F when you are at home and need to cool off. A programmable thermostat makes it easy to maintain your desired temperatures.
Utilize Fans and Strategic Ventilation
If you use air conditioning, a ceiling fan will let you raise the thermostat about 4°F with no noticeable reduction in comfort. Fans cool people, not rooms, by creating a “wind chill” effect. Before you take a shower or hop in the bath, turn on the bathroom fan to remove heat and humidity from your home. The laundry room may also benefit from spot ventilation. Make sure kitchen and bathroom fans vent to the outside, and not just to the attic.
Avoid Heating the Home With Appliances and Lighting
On hotter days, avoid using the oven as much as reasonably possible; cook on the stove, use a microwave oven, or grill out on the deck.
You can also consult our professionals about efficient lighting installation that runs cooler than traditional options. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, only about 10% of the electricity that incandescent lights use results in illumination — the rest is turned to heat.
When washing dishes and clothes, only do it one “full load” at a time. Consider air-drying both dishes and clothing.
Invest in a New Attic Fan
In addition to using an air conditioning system and ceiling fans to keep your home cool enough during the summer, you may also want to look into adding an attic fan. Here are some advantages of a professionally installed attic fan:
